For responders, providers, community helpers, caretakers and business owners, the potential consequences of coping with complex stressors include a range of problems including impacts on work and family life, decision making, personal and professional relationships, mental and physical health implications, substance use, general burnout and even livelihood sustainability. The impacts of stress and traumatic exposure resulting from a combination of internal and external factors can impact an individual’s well-being. Individuals whose work involves prolonged exposure to those that are stressed and/or suffering from traumatic or distressing events are also at risk of developing burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma exposure. This training will include discussion of these issues as they relate to weather-related events.
StrengthenME Storm Response is an effort made possible by two separate grants, both stemming from presidential disaster declarations following severe storms in December 2023 and January 2024 that devastated communities along the coast and inland.
Intended Audience: Individuals impacted by the damaging storms that were experienced in Maine in December 2023 and January 2024 or other severe weather events, and individuals who seek to gain a greater understanding of how to care for themselves or support their families and community after a disaster.
